The Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) is a nonprofit research institution and a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Association (WGL). The Institute is the initiator and center of the Biotech Campus Gatersleben in central Germany.

As an internationally renowned plant research center the IPK is working on the problems of modern biology in fundamental and applied research by focussing on cultivated plants.

Our concern

The central concern of the research at the IPK is to study the genetic diversity of wild and cultivated plants with the aim to make the scientific findings, methods and plant material available for more effective and expanded use of plants in the agricultural sector, but also to be a supplier of new and improved biomaterials especially for pharmacy.

Our strength

The Institute draws its strength from the use of the enormous biological diversity preserved, analyzed and used in its world-famous crop Bank, known as [link]Genebank. In addition to this unique biological material the Researcher are provided with modern techniques of gene and genome research for research and analysis of important processes of evolution, development and expression of crops.

Our research fields

The IPK works on research fields that contribute to a deeper understanding of the molecular genetic and physiological bases of plant characteristic value and plant performance.
