Plants and fungi, although leading sessile lifestyles, are no helpless victims of their fate. In the course of evolution they have developed manifold mechanisms, which allow them to communicate with their environment in different ways or to defend themselves. To this end they produce a vast variety of chemical compounds, notably specialized natural products – so-called secondary metabolites.

At the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry an international team of scientists combines unique chemical and biological expertise for deciphering the complex processes and networks underlying the interplay between organisms and their biotic and abiotic environment. The focus lies on the analyses of plant and fungal natural products and their biological importance as well as on studying the molecular mechanisms on which those interactions are based.

Research findings and outcomes are for sustainable use in crop production, biotechnology and development of active substances, e.g. for pharmaceuticals, and thus ultimately make a contribution to human, animal and plant nutrition and health.
